Weekly Roasts: Koppi and Hydrangea
This week's selection features a decorated roaster in Helsingborg, Sweden and a budding roaster in Berkeley, California, USA.
Dear coffee lovers,
Welcome back! We’re excited to dive into some new roasts with you today. We have two new, delightful coffees for you from Koppi Roasters and Hydrangea Coffee Roasters. Both roasters are focused on delivering exceptional coffees and sharing their love for the coffees they roast with the world. This week’s selections will explore a rich Costa Rican coffee and a vibrant Ethiopian coffee (a fruit-forward masterpiece).
The daily sipper
Koppi Roasters is based in the charming coastal town of Helsingborg, Sweden and was founded in 2007 by Anne Lunell and Charles Nystrand, who are barista and brewers champions. Koppi’s founders highly value their relationships with the farmers they work with and are unapologetically committed to outputting the highest quality coffees. This has helped them establish quite a reputation in the specialty coffee industry.
We selected Koppi’s Costa Rica - Monte Copey to feature this week for its easy-going, flavorful, and balanced attributes. This Costa Rican coffee was produced by Enrique, a member of the Navarro family. He and his brother Josue have been dedicated to the excellence of their family’s farm since 2009:
“[Enrique and Josue] are working with sustainable farming and use only environmentally friendly fertilizers and no pesticides. Every year they do a soil analysis to be able to keep the soil in good health and secure a good yield.”
We’re thrilled to see this level of transparency into the farmer’s process from Koppi and can’t wait to see how the Navarro operation continues to thrive.
This beautiful, yellow honey processed Costa Rican coffee from Koppi is bound to pack some exciting flavors while also being an overall clean cup. This offering from Koppi is expected to present harmonious flavors of dark berries, dried fruit, and florals. If you’re the type of coffee enjoyer looking for a clean, medium bodied, and mildly complex brew, this coffee was picked for you.

The wild one
Our second featured roast this week is from Hydrangea Coffee Roasters who operate out of Berkeley, California, USA. A newcomer to the roasting scene, Bill Li started releasing light, fruit-forward, process-focused coffees for Hydrangea in 2023. New coffees drop on a weekly basis, and with each drop you can expect some incredibly unique, juicy, vibrant coffees and custom label illustrations. Hydrangea currently roasts out of a shared space called CoRo along with a variety of other roasters based in the Bay Area. We’re very excited to try as many wild and funky coffees as possible from the Hydrangea team.
Hydrangea’s Bekele Yutute Bombe is our recommendation for those who prefer a coffee on the wilder end of the spectrum. Produced by Bekele Yutute, this particular Ethiopian coffee is grown 2,300 meters above sea level, which contributes to its complex flavor profile. The natural processing method used for this coffee enhances its fruity characteristics, resulting in a cup that's bursting with flavor and a cheerful personality.
Boasting rich blueberries, tropical, and rhubarb tasting notes, this coffee simply can’t be passed up. If you’re the type of coffee enjoyer who’s been on the hunt for a punchy and fruit-forward Ethiopian coffee, this roast is your match made in coffee heaven. Fair warning: You just might fall in love with this juicy coffee.
